Abstract

463,430. Thermionic cathodes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and RICHARDS, J. Sept. 27, 1935, Nos. 26771/35 and 2284/36. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group X] Fine straight tubes of refractory insulating- material, such as the insulators in indirectly heated thermionic cathodes, are formed by coating a core 1 with a suspension of the material and winding the core in the form of a polygonal helix on a frame of rods 11; these rods are carried by spring-pressed rods 8, whose outward movement during winding is restrained by a side-plate 12. When winding is complete this plate is removed and the springs strain the coated core which is then dried. If the frame is strong enough the coated core is now sintered, but the tubes may be cut in lengths from the frame and then sintered. The insulating material may be supplied from a bath 5 or be sprayed on the core, or the frame with core may be dipped in a bath; the suspension may be made by ball milling a dry mixture of calcined alumina with aluminium hydroxide to which suitable amounts of anhydrous aluminium nitrate and water are added and then ball milled. Multiple bore tubes may be formed by drawing on to the frame two parallel core threads spaced apart the desired distance between the bores. Specification 350,545 is referred to.
