[Class 27] The entrance slot of an apparatus for sorting and testing coins and similar articles is provided between an inclined plate 4 and the upper edge of an inclined surface 3, the coins being swept in bulk up the surface 3 by hand and allowed to fall down the slot. The coins pass from the slot down a short incline 6 to a diameter sorting track 9, along which are placed at decreasing heights a series of deflectors 14a ... 14h which deflect the coins according to their diameter into passages 16 leading to different coin compartments 1. The deflectors 14 'have outwardly curved edges for engaging the coins, and are cylindrical about an axis coincident with the lower rail of the track 9. The upper end of the sorting track, adjacent the inlet, progressively increases in cross-section to avoid jamming of the coins ; a blade spring 13 ensures that they travel in single file past the deflectors. At 10, the lower rail of the track is sufficiently narrow to release overthin coins to a receptacle 12. Instead of passing directly from the deflectors 14 to the receptacles 1, coins of certain diameters may be first passed through a weight or thickness testing track in order that spurious coins, for example, may be rejected. A weight-testing track is provided with three deflectors similar to 14, and, beneath the first two, light spring- blades over which the coins roll. Underweight coins fail to depress the first spring-blade sufficiently to clear the first deflector which ejects them from the track. Correct coins similarly just engage the second deflector which ejects them to a coin compartment 1. Overweight coins pass the second deflector and are ejected by the third. A thickness-testing track has a single thickness-gauging slot in its lower rail, the coins passing through this slot, or to the end of the rail according to their thickness. The apparatus may be arranged for delivering change by providing in each coin compartment 1 an exit slot leading to a common channel for conveying the coins to a receptacle. Each exit slot is similar to the entrance slot of the sorting apparatus, and is provided with a curved surface up which the coins are swept by hand.
