Abstract

463,340. Valves. SAUNDERS, P. K. Dec. 23, 1935, No. 35555. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXVI] Relates to fluid-control valves of the kind having an axially-movable valve member connected with the body or casing by a metal bellows which renders a stuffing-box unnecessary and protects the actuating spindle from the fluid. Fluid enters at 11, passes through an opening in a partition 13 and leaves at 12. A tubular member 15 is screwed into the body at 14, is provided with radial apertures 18, and its lower end is jointed at 17 to the partition 13 and is formed as a seating 16 for the valve member which is built up of a main ring 19, a sleeve 20, a flexible ring 21 and a sealing ring 22, these parts being held together by a screw 23. The collapsable device, in the form of a metal bellows 24, has, at its lower end, an axially extending flange 25 adapted to be clamped between the rings 19, 21 by a wedgelike engagement of sleeve 20 with ring 21. The bellows, therefore, is attached to a non-operative face of the valve member and is supported internally by the sleeve 20. The upper end is clamped between metal ring 27 and flexible ring 28, the latter, and ring 21 being, e.g. of fibre. The valve is actuated by a hand wheel 30 attached to a screwed spindle 31 with reduced end 33 having a part - spherical surface 34 adapted to engage either a block 35, or the upper inturned end of the sleeve 20. The tubular member 15 screens the bellows from the direct flow of fluid. During closing, the main flow is cut off by the ring portion 19 of the valve covering ports 18. Dismantling is effected by unscrewing a nut 37 on member 15 which, upon abutting a cap 32, causes member 15 to be unscrewed. In a modification, Fig. 2, the outer convolutions of the bellows are supported by rings 38, e.g. of white metal, formed by mounting the bellows on a mandrel and pouring the metal down the interior and through the openings. In a further modification, Fig. 3, the upper end of the bellows is out-turned and is clamped between rings 39, 40 to which pressure is applied by the cap 32. The upper ring 40 is formed with a key 41 engaging a slot 42 in the sleeve 20 to hold the latter against rotation.
