Abstract

463,051. Tempering glass. PILKING- TON BROS., Ltd., and FORBES, L. J.-B. Sept. 19, 1935, No. 25983. [Class 56] Relates to apparatus for tempering curved glass sheets in which the sheets, suspended by tongs or the like from a supporting member, are bent to the desired shape after heating and before cooling. According to the invention, the tongs are suspended by a device which allows them to pivot freely and to move horizontally in two directions substantially at right-angles, so that no lateral or twisting force is exerted on the glass sheet at the point of suspension. The blowing frame, also, consists of groups of vertical jet tubes, and each group is so supported that it is adjustable in position to suit the curvature of the glass sheet. The tongs are suspended by blocks 2, Fig. 1, which can be clamped on a tubular supporting member 1. The block is provided with a pin 3 on which an arm 4 turns freely, and a member 5, which runs freely on the arm 4, has an horizontal lower end 7 having a depression 8 in which rests a pivot screw 9, Fig. 10, on a piece 10 that carries a tongs 11. The tongs can thus turn about the screw 9, it can move along the arm 4, and it can turn about the pin 3. The blocks 2 can be attached to rectangular frames 14,.15, Fig. 7, connected by pivot pins 16 and provided with horizontal end members 18 which slide through blocks 19 pivoted to the limbs of a frame 13. The articulated supporting members can be bent to any horizontal curvature to which the glass sheet is bent. The cooling device consists of groups of three vertical jet tubes 22, Fig. 9, connected to headers 24 which are pivoted at 25 to a pipe 26 provided with an air supply pipe 27. A bar 28 attached to the pipe slides through a block 29 which can be clamped on a tubular support 30. The position of the tubes 22 can thus be adjusted so that the whole of the jet orifices are equidistant from the surfaces of the bent glass sheet and the air jets are directed at rightangles to the glass. The blocks 29 can also be clamped to an articulated frame similar to the frame shown in Fig. 7.
