[Class 64 (i)] In a direct-contact feedwater heater and de-aerator, to prevent corrosion of the walls of the container A by the liberated air, the trays C, D in the heating and de-aerating space B are enclosed by walls B<1> separate from the walls of the container and the heated water flows from the space through a pipe or passage B<6> which is sealed by the water in the lower part of the container. The liberated air and uncondensed steam are withdrawn from the bottom of the heating space B through a pipe J. Water enters at the top of the heating space through a pipe G with upwardly directed perforations, and the heating steam flows upwardly from the inlet A<3> over the top of a wall B<1> and then downwards through a perforated plate H. Doors I in a wall B<1> and a door A<7> on the container afford access to the trays, which may be of the kind described in Specification 372,589. The pipe J may discharge into a surface condenser from which condensate is returned and discharged through a perforated pipe M in the heating space. A horizontal container has enclosed heating and de-aerating spaces on each side of a central discharge pipe for the air and uncondensed steam.
