Abstract
Lubricating-compositions especially for use under high pressures consist of a lubricating oil to which is added or is caused to be produced therein, an oil-soluble complex compound formed between an inorganic or an organic metal compound free from unsubstituted hydrocarbon radicals, and an alkyl or aryl compound of an element of groups 5 and 6, right-hand column, of the periodic system, or esters or acids of these elements. Suitable compounds for the first component of the complex are, cuprous chloride, bromide or iodide; cupro-rhodamide; silver azide or chloride; cupro-acetylacetone; nickel oleate; cadmium butyrate; stannic or antimony chloride; and for the second component are, dibutyl sulphide, selenide or telluride; tri-ethyl or propyl phosphine or phosphite; trimethyl amine; triethyl arsenite; amylcetyl- or di-octyl-sulphide; diethyl ether, or butyl mercaptan. Some of these also act as anti-oxidants. The activity of the resulting complex compounds may be increased by adding high-molecular derivatives of organic acids, e.g. monocetyl oxalate, or the substance formed by the action of maleic acid anhydride with cetene.
