Abstract

462,726. Compound sheet materials. FARRELL, F. J. Sept. 11, 1935, No. 25293. [Class 140] Flexible compound sheet material is made by uniting by heat and pressure two or more layers of flexible material such as silk, artificial silk, cotton, or linen fabric, paper, leather or leather substitute, and one or more interposed layers of textile material impregnated with benzyl cellulose, which may contain a plasticiser, e.g. dibutyl phthalate and/or ester gum. In examples : (1) a woven fabric is coated by dipping in or spraying with benzyl cellulose dissolved in alcohol mixed with benzol or toluol, is led from a reel between two lengths of woven fabric such as silk also led from reels, and the layers are united between heated pressure rollers. The compound fabric may be used for gas masks or containers, or for semi-stiff collars, cuffs, &c. The outer layers of fabric may be waterproofed before assembly with aluminium soap and/or paraffin wax emulsion, and the compound fabric or the outer layers before assembly may be fireproofed with a borate, phosphate, or tungstate, e.g. of sodium or potassium ; (2) The outer fabric layers and coated interlayer are cut to the shape of a collar, cuff, &c. and sewn together before hotpressing ; (3) Layers of leather are united together or to a fabric backing by roughening the leather and, if desired, coating with benzyl cellulose before assembling with the coated fabric interlayer and hot-pressing. According to the Provisional Specification, the fabric, leather, &c. layers are united by an interposed continuous sheet of a cellulose ester or ether including cellulose acetate, or by an interposed fabric impregnated with such cellulose ester or ether. A solvent for the cellulose derivative may be applied before pressing to facilitate adhesion, e.g. acetone with or without alcohol in the case of cellulose acetate. Two layers of leather may be united to a central fabric layer by two interposed films of cellulose acetate.
