Abstract

461,642. Vehicle spring-suspensions; springs. AKTIESELSKAPET STROMMENS VAERKSTED. Aug. 20, 1935, No. 23423. Convention date, April 9. [Classes 108 (ii) and 108 (iii)] In vehicle independent wheel spring suspensions a spring system is employed comprising a cylinder and piston with a number of helical springs arranged in the cylinder and adapted to carry the load progressively the springs being so chosen that the relation between the increase in the spring power and the compression of the piston divided by the total force of the spring for that compression remains constant throughout the range of the piston's stroke. Figs. 1 and 3 show upper and lower links or levers 1, 2 pivoted to the chassis 5 at 3, 4 and to a bearing block 8 at 6, 7. The bearing block 8 serves to mount the wheel 9 by means of an axle journal 21 secured to the wheel and in the case of a rear wheel drive having universal couplings 22, 23 with the wheel drive shaft 24. The bearing block also serves to mount at 28 the brake shoes which act, by means of the brake cylinder 29, on the rim 30. The spring arrangement comprises a cylinder 10, piston 13, piston rod 14 and coaxial helical springs 16 .. 18 arranged to come into action successively so that the spring resistance is progressive. The arrangement is such that the spring assembly is, as shown, oblique with relation to the levers 1, 2. In the case of a front wheel as shown in Figs. 7 and 8 a curved bar 35 is, at each end, provided with a double boss, a vertical one for the king bolts or steering swivels 32, which are arranged in the medial plane of the wheel, and a horizontal boss for the pins 37 to which the swing levers 1, 2 are pivoted. Fig. 8 shows the triangle of rods 39 ..,41 for steering, connected by rods 42 to the wheels and by rod 38 to the steering column. The cylinder 10 is filled with oil and the piston is provided with valved apertures 20 to damp spring oscillations.
