[Class 143] In a weighing-machine wherein the weighing range and its indication on a dial by means of a pointer may be changed,'mechanical coupling means are provided between a steelyard poise weight (adjustable to change the weighing range) and a rotatable dial plate carrying major order numerals displayed successively through apertures in a graduated front plate, whereby an appropriate angular movement of the numeral-bearing dial plate is effected for each movement of the poise weight, and a shield or shutter is provided which is automatically moved to cover the numerals during the time the weight adjustment is being effected. As shown, the steelyard poise T carries a nib U which may be positioned in any of the notches V1 ... V4 by first raising the nib by rocking a cam lever S. Pivoted on the cam lever is a link LK connected to one end of a rack N supported by links R1, R2 upon two slidable blocks P1, P2. When the cam lever S is rocked to raise the nib U, the rack is raised into engagement with a pinion H2. Movement of the poise weight to another notch then causes chain-and-gear mechanism L, H1 to rotate the numeral dial plate E so as to display a different set of major order weight numerals through apertures C1, C2, &c. in the graduated front dial plate A. When the rack N is raised to couple-up the numeral dial plate E it pushes-up a bar b thereby raising levers d<1>, d<2> and a masking shutter K, so as to prevent the numerals being seen through the apertures C<1>, C2, &c. until the dial plate has again been uncoupled by positioning the nib U in one of the notches. In order to hold and position the dial plate after disengagement of the rack, a pin l on the shutter may be arranged to descend into one of several slots in a curved arm projecting from the dial plate.
