Abstract
461,437. Resin - coated abrasive. TENNANT, W. J. (Carborundum Co.) Aug. 16, 1935, No. 23104. [Class 60] In preparing resin-coated grains for use in the manufacture of bonded abrasive articles such as wheels and stones, and coated articles such as sandpaper, flexible discs and belts, a mix of abrasive grains coated with pulverized resin and a plasticizing agent is aged in an atmosphere of which the aqueous vapour pressure is less than the vapour pressure of the mix. Absorption of aqueous vapour by the mix, and the consequent tendency for the mix to become sticky and to cake, are thereby avoided. The mix is spread into a layer preferably about one or two inches deep and may be turned or stirred during the ageing to avoid caking of the lower part of the layer. The temperature at which the ageing is performed is preferably as high as possible in order to shorten the time, but is limited by the nature of the mix. Mixes plasticized with furfural, for example, tend to cake if the temperature exceeds 80‹ F., whilst those in which a liquid resin plasticizer is used may be aged at 108‹ F. Examples are given of mixes employing alumina abrasive grains, pulverized " A stage " phenol-formaldehyde resin, and a liquid phenol-formaldehyde resin or furfural as plasticizers, together with the conditions of temperature, hygrometric state of the atmosphere, and time under which the ageing process is carried out. In the case of a certain mix employing a furfural plasticizer the aqueous vapour pressure of the atmosphere is reduced to 9 mm. of mercury by the employment of a dehydrating agent and by circulation of the air in the ageing chamber by a fan, the temperature being 74‹ F. In an example of a mix having a liquid resin plasticizer the ageing is carried out at 85‹ F., the aqueous vapour pressure being 16 mm. of mercury. The method may be applied to heat-hardenable resins, such as phenolic condensation products or certain alkyd resins, or to permanently fusible resins such as novolaks, meta-styrene, and thermo-plastic alkyd resins, or to mixtures of resins, such as a phenolic liquid resin and a dry alkyd resin or powdered shellac. Specification 225,436, [Class 60], is referred to.
