Abstract
Mixtures of hydrocarbons such as mineral oils are separated into fractions of different specific gravity by distributing the oil uniformly over the cross-section of a vessel filled with a solvent of lower specific gravity than the oil, whereby after standing the soluble hydrocarbons form layers or strata of different specific gravity and an insoluble fraction settles at the bottom, the layers being then withdrawn and freed from solvent. The treatment is effected without the application of heat. A tall column c, provided with a jacket maintained at 15--20 DEG C., is filled to half its height with benzine, acetone, or a mixture of ether and alcohol admitted from a tank a. Crude <PICT:0460906/III/1> mineral oil is then admitted to fill the column through a spray distributer h from a tank b maintained at 60 to 70 DEG C. to promote easy flow of the oil. The constituents of low specific gravity dissolve first and remain in the upper layers and the heavier constituents sink through the solvent yielding further layers of increasing gravity. After standing several hours, the column is submitted to pressure, e.g. 3 atmospheres, generated in a vessel m. A valve in an overflow tube i is then opened and liquid from the top of the column flows into a vessel k. After admitting further solvent at the base of the column if necessary, and a further settling period, the layers are drawn off through taps f and the separate layers freed from solvent. Insoluble substances such as asphalt are withdrawn through a tap g. The fractions obtained may be further treated with sulphuric acid, lime and fuller's earth.
