Abstract
460,847. Grinding. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation) July 4, 1935, No. 19087. [Class 60] An abrading-tool for buffing and scouring the breast surface of Louis heels &c. comprises a sleeve 10 of abrasive sheet material, which may be reinforced internally by paper, supported internally by wires 12, each of which is secured at one end to a hub 14, the other end being free, and the wires lying, when free, on a conical surface. The hub 14, which is conical, has in its periphery notches 18 to receive the wires, which have hooked ends 25 and are held in position by an internally tapered surface 22 of a collar 20 mounted on the screwed stem 16 of the hub and engaged by a nut 24 screwing on the stem 16. The hub also has an extension 26 formed with a notched disc 28 and a tapered part 32, which serve to support the wires against radial and torsional strains. The stem 16 is screwed into a rod 38, slidable in a tubular shaft 36, and recessed to receive a pair of clamping bars 40, which have tapered ends 44 engaging a tapered surface in the end of the shaft, so that when the rod 38 is drawn axially of the shaft 36 by a screw 54 rotatably mounted in the end of the shaft, the bars 40 are pressed inwardly to grip the sleeve 10 ; a diametrally placed spring 50 in the rod tends to separate the bars 40. The sleeve 10 may be provided with surplus length, and, when the outer end is worn is drawn out, the worn end being cut off.
