Abstract
460,035. Walls; roofs; ceilings; metal framework. NORRIS, G. H., and TEN TEST FIBRE BOARD CO., Ltd. July 20, 1935, No. 20706. [Classes 20 (ii) and 20 (iv)] A method of attaching the slab or sheet supporting laths 2 of ceilings, walls, partitions, roofs or like structures to joists, studs, rafters, purlins or like frame members 1 consists in providing a member 6 adjustable longitudinally of the frame member and another member 9 adjustable longitudinally of the lath, these two members being firmly and rigidly connected together by clamping means which is adjustable to permit a pivoted movement thereof whereby the lath may be retained on the frame member at any desired angle thereto. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, an angle-iron purlin 1 is provided with an associated slidable member 6 which is of angle form and has a hooked upper edge 8 for engagement with the purlin. The lath 2 is of channel section with inturned flanges 3 and is provided with a slidable member 9 in the form of a plate engaging the underside of the flanges 3. The angle-member 6 and the plate 9 are connected by a bolt 10 which passes through an aperture in the plate 9 and is provided with a nut 12. Before tightening of the nut 12, the bolt 10 constitutes a pivot about which the relative angular position of the lath and purlin may be adjusted. The plate 9 may, alternatively, have a screw-threaded stud welded thereto and projecting through the member 6 for engagement by a nut. In a modification, the flanges 3 of the channel lath 2 may be outturned, the plate 9 being then provided with bent edges for engaging these flanges. Two laths 2 are shown in Fig. 4 abutting end to end beneath a purlin 1 from which they are supported by slidable members 6 of channel cross-section. One member 6 has a hook 8 for engaging the vertical flange of the purlin, and the other member 6 is stepped to engage the horizontal flange of the purlin. When the purlin is of rectangular cross-section, the hookshaped upper edge 8 of the member 6 is replaced by a right-angled extension. The purlin 30 shown in Fig. 7 is of tubular form and is connected to the lath 2 by an angular member 31 having a curved arm for engaging the purlin 30. Other forms of purlin are of T or channel section. The slabs or sheets, which may be of fibreboard, corrugated iron, &c. are secured to the laths by screws or bolts entering holes in the base portions of the laths, or by screws or nails which pass through holes in the base portions of the laths and enter wood cores or fillers 32 provided in the laths as shown in Fig. 8. The filler 32 is maintained in position by a continuous plate 33 or a series of separate plates welded to the side walls of the lath. Two abutting slabs 5 are connected to a lath 21, as shown in Fig. 5, by a bolt 22 which is received in channels formed in the abutting edges of the slabs and is welded at its lower end to a plate 23. The bolt 22 passes through the lath 21 and is fitted at its upper end with a nut 27 and a washer 26 which engages the top of the lath. Means for connecting two laths 2a to a lath 2, as shown in Fig. 1, consists of a plate 15 slidable in the lath 2 and connected by bolts 18 to plates 9 slidable in the laths 2a.
