Abstract

459,136. Gramophones. DAY, H. L. V., and DAY, E. H., 17, Lisle Street, Leicester Square, London. June 28, 1935, No. 18614. [Class 40 (ii)] [See also Group XVIII] A display cabinet 1, having windows C<1>, C<2>, C<3>, C<4>, C5 through which advertisements, objects, &c. arranged in compartments behind the windows are seen when lamps in the compartments are illuminated, is combined with a gramophone &c. 5 and with mechanism which automatically lights each compartment in turn while the gramophone reproduces speech relative to the objects in said compartment. The gramophone pick-up 4 is arranged to begin at the middle of the record 3, and mechanism is provided whereby the arm is raised at the end of the traverse, transferred back to the middle of the record, and lowered thereon for repetition. This mechanism comprises a shaft 12 driven by the gramophone motor 8 and geared to a vertical shaft 15 carrying a fast and a loose pinion 18, 19 respectively. The pinion 19 is geared to a pinion 21 fast on a vertical spindle 20 which carries at its top a turn-table 34 furnished with a flat hump 35. A universally pivoted rod 36 carries an arcuate plate 39 supporting a runner 40 on an L-shaped arm 41 fixed to the pick-up arm 7. The rod 36 rests on the table 34, and when this rotates is raised by the hump 35, thus lifting the pick-up 4 off the record. A cam 28 driven by the shaft 12 rotates once for each traverse of the record and pushes a spring-pressed arm 30 to tilt a bell-crank 25 against the action of a spring 32. This releases a pin 27 on an arcuate ratchet 21<1> pivoted at 23 to the pinion 19, and allows a spring 24 to pull the ratchet 21<1> into engagement with the pinion 18, thus locking pinions 18 and 19 and starting the table 34 rotating. The crank 25 has returned to meet the pin 27 after one revolution thereof, thus automatically stopping the table 34 after one rotation. The swinging of the arm 7 back to the middle of the record is effected by a pin 42 on the table 34, which strikes against an adjustable face 47 of an arm 44 pivoted at 43 and rigid with an upper arm 45 which is thus swung laterally against the pull of a spring 46 and pushes the arm 41 aside. The lamps in the compartments may be illuminated through mercury switches carried by right-angled rods R<1>, R<2>, R<3>, R<4>, R<5> pivoted on a common shaft and each having an adjustable screw 52 the bottom of which rests on a cam K<1>, K2, K3, K4, K<5>, all of which are mounted on a spindle 17 driven through gearing 16 from the shaft 12. Each cam has a gap into which the screws 52 fall, thus tilting in succession the mercury switches. The inoperative switches may tilt backward to allow the circuit to be completed through double poles therein, thus ensuring that one lamp only, at a time, is illuminated. Instead of mercury switches, the shaft 12 may carry switch contacts or the arm 7 control switch gear for the lamps.
