Abstract
459,114. Discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. July 23, 1936, No. 20453. Convention date, July 25,1935. [Class 39 (i)] A gas- or vapourfilled arc - discharge device comprises a directly- or an indirectly-heated cathode which is surrounded by a control grid provided with a cap, and a cupshaped anode which is adapted to overhang, at least in part, the cap of the grid. An indirectly-heated cathode 4, Fig. 1, in an arc rectifier is located within a cylindrical heat shield 5 and comprises a metal cylinder which houses a spiral heater 9 mounted within a metal cylinder 8. Radial ribs may be fitted to the cylinder 4 and, preferably, also to the cylinder 8. Barium oxide is provided on the ribs and on the internal surface and, preferably, on the external surface of the cathode. For small outputs, the cathode consists of parallel filaments 10, Fig. 2, which are connected in series or in parallel or partly in series and partly in parallel. Tungsten filaments may be wound with nickel wire to which is applied oxide either before or after the winding operation. The cathode is housed within a cylinder 11 provided with a perforated cover 12. The grid 6 is formed from a perforated carbonized nickel strip and is provided with a cylindrical graphite perforated cap 13 and a disc 6a. The anode 15 is mounted on the pin 16 and is spaced from the grid at a distance which is as small as possible. The shape of the internal surface of the anode conforms to that of the cap 13 to ensure a homogeneous field therebetween, and the shape of the external surface of the anode conforms to that of the adjacent portion of the bulb. The filling, which may consist of vapour, e.g. mercury, or rare gas or a mixture thereof, is screened from the neck 3 by a glass partition 17 into which is sealed the anode pin. A glass tube 18 is fused to the pin. Mercury 20 may be located in an extension which is arranged in the metal cap 21.
