Abstract

<PICT:0458478/III/1> <PICT:0458478/III/2> <PICT:0458478/III/3> Apparatus for the continuous manufacture of superphosphate or mixed fertilizers comprises a malaxator-evaporator 1 divided transversely of its length into two parts, a first part into which the raw material, e.g. calcium phosphate or cyanamide, is introduced together with acid, e.g. sulphuric acid with, if desired, phosphoric or other acids, which is separated from the second part 4 by a partition 23 dipping into the reacting materials to form a hydraulic seal so that gases liberated in the first part escape without dilution with air, which is circulated in the second part so as to assist evaporation of water, the said second part being provided with two shafts carrying mixing blades. A preliminary mixer 4a forces the reactants through the second part 4 into which air that has served for cooling and drying the finished product enters by nozzle 2 and is exhausted through passage 5. The level in the mixer is regulated by a sluice gate 34. The product flows into a rotary vat 6, mounted on a circular rail 19 toothed at 37 and turning on rollers 18, which vat contains a dividing device. The vat, divider, and malaxator are actuated for example by a motor 33, Fig. 3, through suitable reduction gear. The fixed roof of the vat supports a partition 7 having a semi-cylindrical portion 8 terminating in a tubular outlet 11 through which the finished product falls on to a conveyer 17, and through which the current of air is drawn in. Sealing devices such as 14 are provided between the partition and the wall and floor of the vat. The divider comprises a rotary shaft with arms 9 carrying knives 12 which cut and divide the advancing mass of fertilizer. Scrapers 15 direct the powder to the exit 11. A modified device comprises a vertical caterpillar mounted on rollers 40, 41, Fig. 5, and carrying the knives 12 and scrapers. This may be mounted on a frame so that it can be raised for repair.
