Abstract
458,476. Valves. EWART, J. H., and HAWES, W. B., and EWART & SON, Ltd., 346, Euston Road, London. June 20, 1935, No. 17769. [Class 135] A device for controlling the gas supply to a water heater or the like of the kind comprising a gas governor valve 7 subject to the overriding control of a water flow responsive so as to cut off the gas supply when the water flow to the heater ceases, is devoid of any structural connection between the gas governor and the water flow responsive device capable of providing a leakage path for the gas into the water supply or the water into the gas supply. To this end, the gas governor has a housing 1 separate from the water flow responsive device. The gas valve 7 may also be subject to the overriding control of a bi-metallic strip or the like 16 which closes the gas valve automatically upon extinction of the flame of the main heater burner or of pilot burner therefor. As shown, a conical valve member 7 with a rounded edge 17 is connected to a diaphragm 4 clamped between the parts of the housing 1 and is also connected by a ball joint 10 to a rod 11 carrying a stirrup plate 12 having apertures 13, 14. A lever 15 connected to the water flow responsive, and the bi-metallic strip 16 pass through the apertures 13, 14 respectively so as to engage their upper boundaries after a certain amount of lost motion if the water flow ceases or the flame of the main burner or the pilot burner is extinguished. The valve 7 is adjustably loaded by an interchangeable plug 19 accessible through the inlet 2.
