Abstract

458,435. Steam engine valves and valve-gear. LENTZ, H., 74, Kurf³rstendamm, Halensee, Berlin. June 20, 1935, No. 17761. Convention date, Dec. 19, 1934. [Classes 122 (i) and 122 (ii)] A multiple-cylinder locomotive &c. engine is provided with separate inlet and exhaust poppet valves for each end of the cylinders which are independently operated from different points on an oscillating lever, or from eccentrics having different throws, and are simultaneously and independently adjusted. The inlet and exhaust valves 13, 15 are operated by transverse shafts 10, 11 provided with cranks which are connected by links 8a, 9a to different points 8, 9 of an oscillated lever 6 which receives its motion from a crank, and which is adjusted from the driver's stand by a bell-crank 1, 2. The arm 2 carries sliding blocks 4 engaging guides 3. Blocks are interconnected by a pin 5 upon which the lever 6 is mounted. The compression becomes later with increase of charge. The shafts 10, 11 operate the valves through cams 12, 14. The links 8a, 9a may be upon the same side or upon opposite sides of the engine. In the latter case, pins 5 are provided on a tranverse shaft and control levers of different lengths are connected to the links 8a, 9a. Constructions are described wherein the cranks of the links 10, 11 are on the same side of the engine, and wherein the valves are arranged coaxially and are operated by cams which contact intermediate levers acting on discs on the ends of the valve spindles after the manner of rolling levers. The links 8a, 9a may be operated by a compound Lentz eccentric which consists of a member 18 with two eccentric races 23, 22 provided with a slot which is transversely shiftable between flanges 30 in a rectangular part by screw mechanism by a shaft 21. The throw of the exhaust eccentric is less than that of the admission eccentric. The eccentrics may be independent and adjusted by teeth of different pitch on the same rods. The admission and exhaust valves may be separately adjusted.
