[Classes 11 and 132 (iii)] [See also Group. ,XVIII] A display or illusional device &c. comprises an intaglio representation of any object, which is coloured similarly to the object itself, or otherwise, and preferably has depths less than the corresponding heights of the object. This is stated to give to the representation an appearance of change or of motion when seen by a relatively moving observer. Fig. 2 shows an inverse mask 14 of the human face, intended to be viewed from the right, the depressions corresponding to the eyes, nose, lips, &c. being coloured in natural tints. Associated with the intaglio representation may be plane surfaces 10, cameo representations, or mirrors. The device may be made to oscillate &c. continuously or intermittently in any direction, and may be of transparent or translucent material and be illuminated from the rear. Fig. 7 is a plan view of two recessed representations of eyes 16 behind which rotates by convection currents about a lamp 18, a screen 19 having a slot in its circumference. The light passing through this slot reaches in turn mirrors 22 from which it is reflected to mirrors 24 and thence on to the eyes 16, thus lighting up the left and right hand whites of the eyes alternately, and giving an appearance of movement when viewed by a relatively stationary observer. The eyes 16 may be translucent to transmit some of the lamp light directly.
