Abstract

458,318. Gravity-separation apparatus. HARTLEY, C. J., Cae Brest, The Avenue, Harpfields, Stoke-on-Trent. July 23, 1935, No. 20865. [Class 111] A settling-tank is divided into two or more parallel channels, the admission of liquid to each channel being separately controlled and each dividing wall being broken away at some suitable point to provide communication between the channels. Figures 1 and 2 show a pair of settling-tanks with outer walls 11 and a lower dividing wall 10. Each tank is divided into parallel channels 12 by a mid-feather 13 which as shown, stops short to leave a communicating passage 27 at the outlet end. The settled matter is removed by an elevating dredger, which may be of the kind described in Specification 372,481, [Group XXX]. The dredger is supported on a carriage 24 which moves on rails on the wall 11 to traverse each channel lengthwise. The dredger travels cross-wise on rails 23 on the carriage to move from one channel to the channel communicating with it, the depending portion of the dredger moving through the passage 27. The depending portion can be lifted to move over the wall 10 in bringing the dredger from one tank to the other. The flow through the channels is controlled by baffles 18 turning on vertical axes or by penstocks or sluice gates. The flow from an inlet pipe 21 to the tanks is controlled by valves or penstocks 16 and the flow to an outlet pipe 22 by valves or penstocks 20. Coarse screens 17 and finer screens 19 are provided at the inlet and outlet ends of the tanks respectively. Fig. 7 shows a tank with deep outer walls and a dredger the jib of which has an upper rigid portion 28a and a lower portion 28b pivoted to the upper portion.
