Abstract

In the production of chlorhydrins by absorbing an olefine and chlorine in separate vessels between which an aqueous liquor circulates, the circulation of the liquor is effected by the agitation in the two reaction vessels. In the arrangement shown, the reaction vessels A, B <PICT:0458061/IV/1> are provided with centrifugal agitators which cause the liquor to overflow from each vessel and circulate through pipes Ta, Tb, which are arranged so as to offer a large surface for cooling the liquor. Chlorine and olefine are admitted from holders C and D and water is admitted at I, liquor being withdrawn at J. Examples describe the production of ethylene and propylene chlorhydrins. The solution withdrawn is freed from olefine dichloride by extraction with a small quantity of solvent which may be a petroleum fraction boiling at 105--110 DEG C. for ethylene chlorhydrin and cyclohexane for propylene dichloride. The purified liquor is then treated with a solvent to extract the chlorhydrin. For ethylene chlorhydrin a mixture of isopropyl ether and normal propyl alcohol is mentioned, and for propylene chlorhydrin, benzene. The extractions may be effected by the apparatus described in Specifications 307,868, [Class 2 (iii)], and 435,725.
