[Class 96] A closed-top spout 22, Fig. 9, for feeding pulp under pressure to a paper-making machine is provided with a discharge nozzle 7, the top section 34 of which is adjustable longitudinally of the wire W to permit the width of the discharge opening to be varied. To effect such adjustment, the top section 34 is mounted on a front plate 30 which is carried by a cover plate 26 supported between the side members of the spout and adjusted longitudinally by screwed shafts 37, Figs. 8 and 9, connected to slides 36 and geared to a common actuating shaft 41. Other adjustments for the nozzle are provided, namely, the front plate 30 is vertically adjustable by screwed shafts 68 geared to a common actuating shaft 75 ; and the inclination of the top section 34 which is hinged to the front plate 30 may be varied by main adjusting screws 81, Figs. 9 and 10, which carry the supporting beam 83, fine adjustment along the length of the section 34 being obtained by a number of adjustable links 84. Behind the nozzle there may be a rotating distributing roll 47, Fig. 9, the latter being longitudinally adjustable. To permit such adjustment the end shafts 46 of the roll are mounted in the side walls of the spout by slides 45 and the bearings for the shafts are carried by screwed blocks mounted on separate screwed shafts 52, 54, Fig. 8 ; and the roll is driven from a shaft 64 through mitre-gearing 66, the driving-member of which travels along a key-way on the shaft. The spout may be connected to a flow box A, Fig. 5, giving the necessary head, the connecting passage 15 to the spout having a short depending baffle 11 ; alternatively, the spout may be directly connected to the pump, in which case to ensure even distribution of pulp to the whole width of the nozzle, the connecting conduit 90, 91 may be divided as shown in Fig. 14, a control valve being placed at a point well in advance of the first fork.
