Abstract

<PICT:0457934/IV/1> In the production of solid paraffin hydrocarbons by thermal conversion of carbon monoxide and hydrogen at pressures of 1--50 atm., the catalyst is continuously passed through the reaction space, freed outside this space at least partly from hydrocarbons deposited on it, and returned, if desired after regeneration. Thus, it may be extracted with a suitable solvent such as middle oil, benzene or pyridine and treated at elevated temperature with hydrogen. Suitable catalysts are metals of Group 8, e.g. iron or nickel, plus basic substances such as oxides, hydroxides or carbonates of alkali or alkaline earth metals, if desired together with other metals or metal oxides and carriers. Usually the catalyst traverses the reaction space in 1--3 weeks. Plate ovens wherein the catalyst is moved over superposed plates by scrapers, or tubular bundle ovens, which may be inclined and include a worm device, can be employed, or the catalyst may be carried by a moving band which can be cooled. Temperature is preferably 150--300 DEG C., and the molecular ratio of CO to H2 may be from 1 : 2 to 2 : 1. The catalyst B is moved by scrapers F over plates D through which a cooling agent is circulated from O, the heat absorbed being utilized at P. The initial gases enter at M and the products leaving at N are fractionated by cooling. The catalyst with adherent paraffin wax passes to the chamber H, is extracted in the vessel J, and returned by a worm K and conveyer L. Specification 364,665 is referred to.
