Abstract

<PICT:0457910/III/1> Apparatus for the determination of carbon-containing gases comprises a measuring-chamber 1 from which a sample of gas is passed through an absorber 6 for removing carbon dioxide originally present, a combustion tube 7 for oxidizing the carbon components and a bubbling tube 9 preferably of helical profile containing a definite amount of an indicator solution sensitive to carbon dioxide. The indicator solution after use is passed into a trough 13 with parallel sides, situated between a source of light 23 and a photo-electric cell 25. The latter is connected in opposition to a second cell 27 with a microammeter 28 in bridge. The indicator is supplied from a measuring-vessel 19 fed by a constant level reservoir 17. A reservoir 22 contains a solvent for washing out the apparatus, and a bulb 21 is used to start the siphon 14 discharging the contents of the observation chamber 13. In a modification, the measuring of the gas sample is effected automatically by a mechanical pump, to which the various cocks controlling the apparatus may be connected.
