[Class 80 (ii)] In change-speed gearing, friction clutches 14, 15, 16, 17, Fig. 1, are alternatively engaged by rotary extensible pressure chambers 24, Fig. 3, which are formed by hollow annular bodies of U-shaped cross-section open at their outer edges and there held rigidly. Four of these chambers 24 are shown in Fig. 1 all supported along with the clutch discs in a drum 60 which rotates with a driven shaft 38. The chamber 243 of the clutch 17 is shown with a peripheral duct at 37 leading through an axial duct 36 in the outer wall of the drum 60, and through ducts 36<1>, 44, 45, Fig. 3, to a non-rotary chamber 52 which is supplied with pressure air or liquid through a pipe 48, Fig. 1, fed through a suitable control selector valve (not shown). The thrust of the chamber 24<3> when it expands is taken by a ring plate 29<1> rigidly supported in the drum, and springs 31 are provided for freeing the plates of any clutch when the pressure chamber corresponding is exhausted. There is friction between rotary plates 43, Fig. 3, passing between the distributing chambers 51, 52, &c. which do not rotate. Graphite packing rings 57 are adapted to transmit the thrust of the pressure fluid in spaces 80 to the rotary plates 43. An arrangement is described with reference to Fig. 2a (not shown), having fixed projecting cheeks which ease the pressure with which the rings 57 are thrust against the plates 43.
