[Class 44] In a latch in which the spring resistance to pressing in the bolt is less than that opposing turning of the follower, the spring C bears at one end against a part of the bolt B and at the other against a slidable plate E bearing against one face of the follower d, the other face of the follower bearing against a part of the bolt tail. When the follower is rotated the bolt is retracted and compresses the spring from the outer end, and at the same time the plate is moved in the opposite direction and compresses the spring from the inner end. When the bolt is pressed in by engagement, for example, with the striking plate, the spring is compressed from the outer end only. The bolt B, shown separate, Fig. 4, comprises a head b having riveted thereto a plate having a tongue b<4> supporting the spring, and two limbs the forward portions b<1> of which are centrally disposed in the casing, the limbs being stepped so that the rear portions b<3> bear against and are guided by one wall of the casing. The ends b<5> are bent up for engagement by the follower. The sliding plate E, Fig. 5, has a flange e<2> resting against the follower, a pressed up projection e<3> supporting the spring, and bent ends e<4> co-operating with guides in the casing. The bolt is reversible for right or left hand use.
