Abstract

456,146. Condensers. RADIO CONDENSER CO., Thorne Street, Camden, New Jersey, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Cramer, S. S.) May 3, 1935, No. 13289. Convention date, May 9, 1934. [Class 38 (ii)] The end bearing-plates of a variable condenser are secured together by metal rods, one at least, on each side of the shaft, the extremities of the rods and the end plates having cooperative formation such that these parts, in assembling must be forced into operative position, there being a gripping engagement across a reduced part of the rods as well as on opposite sides of the end plates, the gripping surfaces being of relatively large lateral area. In the example Fig. 1, each rod 5, 6 is circumferentially grooved as at 7 and this part is forced into a slot in each plate 1, 2 so that the reduced part is gripped by the sides of the slot and the sides of the grooves grip the two sides of the plate. The bars 5, 6 may be prevented from turning by the provision of longitudinal slots into which a portion of the frame is forced. Shield-plates 11 between the units may be similarly secured. The stators 17 may be held on strips of insulating material supported by the bars 5, 6. In one example, Fig. 3, forked members 19 fit into further annular grooves 20 in the bars, the other end of the members being riveted to the insulation 22. In further modifications, the insulating strips are held in slots running the length of the bars as is shown in one example in Fig. 21 where the strip 33 is gripped in the bar 6 and the stator is supported by soldering the outer end of a lug 81 extending from the stator tiebar 24 to an eyelet 76 in an insulating bushing 75. Other methods of securing the stator are described, in which the stator tie-bar is soldered direct to an eyelet in the strip 33 or to a bracket or to short rods 41, Fig. 23, riveted to the strip. In a further modification, a metal plate is gripped in the longitudinal slot in the bar 5 or 6, an insulating strip as 33 being riveted on one edge to the metal plate and on the other to a stator tie-bar. A trimming condenser plate may be associated with the stator securing means by holding it against the insulating supporting strip as by the rivet or eyelet as is shown at 78, and this plate coacts with one face of a squared cross-bar 5 in Fig. 23, or with a further cross-bar of flat cross-section in Fig. 21. Specification 454,174 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also constructions in which the insulating stator supports are in the form of strips extending the length of the condenser and secured in slots in the end plates or riveted to a flat lengthwise bar similar to that shown in Fig. 21. In one of these modifications, a trimmer plate forms part of a bracket used for securing the stator tie-bar to the insulating strip. To secure the strips in open-ended slots in the end plates, the open ends may be closed over a metal reinforcement such as a bar or a flanged collar. Frame rods such as 5, 6 are also described force-fitted into flanged holes in the end plates and, in some cases spot-welded, or reduced at the ends and similarly secured, or expanded into and flanged over plain holes in end plates. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
