Abstract

A resinous composition comprises a phenolaldehyde or alkyd resin together with a neutral ester of a monohydric phenol with a dicarboxylic acid. Specified esters are those derived on the one hand from phenol or an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or chloro derivative thereof, and on the other from phthalic, succinic, fumaric and maleic acids. Preferably, 100 parts by weight of the resin are used in admixture with 10--40 parts of the ester, and the ingredients melted together. The phenol-aldehyde resins may be prepared from phenol, cresols, xylenols, phenylphenols, benzylphenols and the higher alkylphenols such as butyl-, dibutyl-, amyl- and octyl-phenol, using formaldehyde, acetaldehyde or furfuraldehyde as the aldehyde component; modifying agents such as rosin may have been employed in their manufacture. The alkyd resins, e.g. that from glycerol and phthalic acid, may also have been modified with rosin or the higher fatty acids. Fillers, accelerators, colouring matters and additional plasticizers may be added to the composition. For use as a varnish, a drying oil and solvent may be present. Examples are given of compositions consisting of: (1) glycerol-phthalic anhydride resin and diphenylphthalate; (2) phenolformaldehyde resin and dicresyl phthalate, or a mixture thereof with diphenyl phthalate; di(trichlorphenyl)phthalate may also be used; (3) phenol-aldehyde resin and esters prepared from phthalic acid or succinic acid and p various cresylic acids. The compositions are useful for the manufacture of films and sheets, and for coating, moulding and impregnating purposes. Phenol esters.--The preparation of cresyl phthalates from 1 mol. of phthalyl chloride and 2 mols. of various cresylic acids is described; also the production in analogous manner of cresyl phenyl phthalate, cresyl succinate, di-(p.tert-butylphenyl)-phthalate, di-(o- and p-benzylphenyl) - phthalates, di - (o - phenyl phenyl) - phthalate, and similar esters derived from amylphenol and octylphenol. The esters may be purified by treatment with dilute aqueous alkali permanganate. U.S.A. Specification 1,905,974 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the use of phenolic esters of benzoic acid and specifies phenyl, cresyl, monochlorphenyl and trichlorphenyl benzoates. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
