Abstract
Rubber substitute is obtained by treating animal or vegetable oil with hydrogen polysulphides, preferably at higher temperatures than 100 DEG C. and in presence of stabilizing substances. Solid or liquid loading material or mineral oils may also be present. The product may be further treated by the same process, or by known vulcanizing processes, e.g. with sulphur chloride, or as described in Specification 453,921 with sulphur and sulphuretted hydrogen. Stabilizing agents preferred are such as raise the surface tension; their b.p. may be below the sulphurization temperature; agents specified are tetrachlorethane, dichlorethane, dichlorethylene and methylene bromide. For example, 25 kg. of a 9--1 mixture of raw hydrogen polysulphides with tetrachlorethane is stirred into 100 kg. of rapeseed oil at 150 DEG C.; on cooling, sulphur crystallizes out and is filtered off; the thick yellow oil is further treated at 145 DEG C., with 10--15 kg. of sulphurizing mixture, and is allowed to cool slowly yielding a transparent solid. Instead of filtering off the sulphur the heating may be continued, in presence or not of hydrogen sulphide and a vulcanizing catalyst, to combine the sulphur and so complete the vulcanization.
