Abstract

454,427. Compound sheet materials; paper. DENNISON-VICTOR CO., Ltd., Minerva Road, Park Royal, London.- (Assignees of Asnes, B. ; c/o Dennison Manufacturing Co., Framingham, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) March 29, 1935, No. 9794. Convention date, Oct. 20, 1934. [Classes 96 and 140] A laminated decorative material comprises a layer of crepe paper and a less stretchable covering layer of paper, metal foil, regenerated cellulose, &c. connected thereto by adhesive at the crests of the crÛping and adapted to be readily torn between the parts connected to the crÛpe layer when the material is stretched. The adhesive is applied uniformly to the less stretchable layer or to the crests of the crepe paper. Two layers crÛped in different directions may be united so that stretching in either of two directions will tear one or other layer, or paper crÛped in two directions may be used so that stretching in either direction will tear the less stretchable covering layer. The less stretchable layer may be weakened, torn, or cut along lines extending transversely or diagonally to the direction of stretching or following patterns comprising lines, dashes, perforations, curves, or stipples, e.g. by passing thelayer before joining the crepe paper between a corrugated roll and a plain or similarly corrugated hard or soft roll, or by passing the laminated product under tension between a corrugated roll and another roll with the less stretchable layer next to the corrugated roll. The laminated material with the weakened layer may be stretched to open the slits during manufacture or by hand when it is to be used. In addition to crÛping, one or both layers may be furnished with corrugations extending parallel to the direction of stretching. The layers may be of different colours or may be printed with patterns, or coated with paint, lacquer, &c. to give a metallic or silky effect. As shown, crÛpe paper from a roll 11, Fig. 8, is corrugated longitudinally by grooved rolls 12 and 13, coated with adhesive at 14, and united between rolls 19 and 20 to plain paper from a roll 15 weakened by passing between a plain roll 17 and a roll 16 provided with discontinuous ridges ; the laminated strip then passes around a drying cylinder 21, between a corrugated roll 22 and a rubber faced roll 23, Fig. 11, to tear the uncrÛped layer on its lines of weakening, between pairs of rolls 24 and 25, Fig. 8, the latter being driven faster to stretch the sheet, and is wound up at 26. One or both pairs of rolls 24 and 25 may be corrugated circumferentially to stretch the sheet transversely as well as longitudinally.
