Abstract

Curative albuminous preparations suitable for administration by the mouth are obtained from vaccines, specific sera, preparations of animal organs, normal serum, and whey by a process of partial digestion with pepsin. The original albuminous substance is treated in an incubator with pepsin and hydrochloric acid and the digestion is stopped when a test shows that the liquid gives a negative nitric acid reaction, but still gives a positive biuret reaction. The mixture is then adjusted to the iso-electric point, the precipitate formed is removed, and if necessary the liquid is filtered and sterilized. Examples relate to the treatment of tuberculosis serum prepared according to Specification 297,675, [Class 81 (i)], and of cancerous tissue. It is stated that sera and vaccines retain their specific action, but that serum sickness and anaphylactic shock are avoided. Non-specific albumens yield tonic and blood-building preparations. The preparations may be taken mixed with milk. Specifications 12523/09, 225,585, [both in Class 81 (i)], 387,641, and 438,592, also are referred to.
