Abstract
453,605. Targets. SUMNER, O., Hill View, Lyminge, Kent. March 23, 1935, No. 9106. [Class 20 (i)] Relates to indicating targets of the kind in which the target face is constituted by two sets of spaced elements arranged in an electric circuit adapted to be closed, and thus to illuminate the score, when a bullet strikes the target and bridges the space between two adjacent elements. According to the invention, means are provided whereby the closing of the circuit operates a device for moving one set of elements to eject the bullet and for subsequently returning the elements to their original position. In the construction shown, the target is mounted upon the hinged front 2 of a box 1 which carries a switch 1a, variable resistance 3, transformer 4, motor 5, a relay 6 with a mercury trip switch 7, and a target-face lamp 8 mounted within a combined reflector and projectile receptacle 8a. The target comprises two sets of elements A, B forming concentric rings, the rings of the set A being electrically insulated from one another while the B rings form a common return. The A rings are stationary and are carried by spiders connected to the front frame 2. The B rings are connected by spiders to a front plate 22. This plate is connected by spring- urged rods 13 to a frame 14 behind which is arranged a cam 18 on a shaft 17 which is driven by the motor 5. The circuit diagram is shown in Fig. 5. In operation, the bullet closes the circuit, thus energizing the associated lamp and also the electromagnet 6 which trips the switch 7. The closing of this switch drives the motor 5 to actuate the cam 18 and a slip ring contact 21, or like device, on the shaft 17 operates to close the circuit, independently of the bullet, until the shaft has made one complete revolution. During this movement of the shaft, the cam 18 urges the B rings forwardly to eject the bullet and subsequently releases them to be returned to their original position by springs 15. In a modification, the target face consists of a stationary front plate having holes through which pass projections on a movable rear plate.
