Abstract
452,874. Crochet hooks. NURSE, C. J., 11, Carlyle Road, Edgbaston, and BAKER & FINNEMORE, Ltd., 199, Newhall Street, both in Birmingham. March 15, 1935, Nos. 8000 and 20899. [Class 112] [See also Group VIII] A separate metal point d or g is attached to the end of a knitting, crochet or the like pin formed of a metal (e.g. steel) wire core a and a sheath b of celluloid or like cellulose derivative, casein, resin, or the like, the point and sheath forming a continuous smooth surface. The point d is countersunk at e, and attached to the correspondingly shaped end of the sheath by a threaded or roughened end of the core. The point g is formed from a flat blank and is secured by adhesive to the sheath, whose end is reduced in diameter, the wire being also secured by adhesive penetrating into the interior of the sheath. Knobs may be attached to the other end of the pins by heat or adhesive. To ensure a smooth junction between point and sheath, the pin may be planished, in long rounding tools (moderately heated, e.g. electrically), and polished by a rag, soaked in acetone. The first Provisional Specification states that the steel core may be tempered, that an aluminium point may be used whose diameter at the jointing rim may be slightly less than that of a cellulose acetate sheath which is caused to fill the countersunk part by means of heated press tools, that other forms of jointing face such as a sunk recess of larger diameter than the core or a short neck on the point piece may be used, and that a metal knob may be held to the sheath by a neck piece. The second Provisional Specification states that the point (g) grips the sheath resiliently, that the point (which may be of a white metal alloy) may be slightly smaller in diameter than the pin to allow for springing open in fitting and may be secured by adhesive or heat or both. It is also stated that the point is carried up the pin for the whole length of the taper of the point.
