452,740. Writing-machines; pens. MASON & SONS, Ltd., E. N., Arclight Works, Colchester.-(Assignees of Borel, (nÚe RÚ-i-nier), Z., and Grange, T. ; 25, Rue Richard Lenior, Paris) Aug. 12, 1935, No. 22696. Convention date, Sept. 8, 1934. [Class 146 (iii)] A machine for reproducing lettering or designs from a pattern or copy comprises a framework adapted to rest upon the surface on which the lettering or the like is to be reproduced, and having a plate mounted in the framework and bearing patterns, lettering or the like, the plate being rotatable to bring a selected pattern or letter beneath a tracer element movable over the plate, the movements of the tracer being transmitted to a pen or pencil disposed at one side of the framework by horizontal movable linkage which is adjustable for varying independently the height, width and inclination of the matter reproduced. The machine comprises a base plate carrying the rotatable design-bearing plate the tracer and pen carriages, and their connecting linkage, and the base plate is provided with running rollers and a slot which engages guide rail 4 fixed to a stationary guide bar 3, so that the machine may be moved over the surface on which the latters are to be reproduced, being held in its adjusted position by a manually depressed friction member 107. The lettering &c. 8 to be reproduced is carried by a plate 7 detachably secured to a rotatable plate 9 which is adapted to be looked in position with any desired letter beneath a spring-pressed tracer 31 by means of spring catch 15 carried by a finger key member 16. The letters are arranged in concentric circles on the plate 7 and the tracer 31 may be positioned in the appropriate aperture 32 to bring the tracer over the letter to be reproduced Movement of the tracer is transmitted to the pen &c. carriage 35 by connections which are adjusted to vary the slope, size &c. of the reproduced letters. The tracer carriage 18 slides on a rod 20 which itself is slidable in a perpendicular direction on a guide rod 24 and in a slot at the right-hand side of the machine, and the pen carriage 35 slides similarly on a guide rod 37 itself slidable on a guide rod 47 and in a slot at the right-hand side of the machine. Transverse movement of the carriage 18 is transmitted to the pen carriage 35 by means of a lever 56 pivoted to the base plate of the machine and connected to a link 52 by means of a bolt which passes through a slot in a lever fixed to and slightly spaced from the lever 56. The latter is provided with a slot in which a bolt 57 slides, the bolt also engaging with a slot 59 formed in the carriage 35. The link 52 also carries a stud 53 engaged in a slot 54 in the plate 18 and a second link 55 is provided to ensure that the link 52 always maintains a parallel motion. By adjusting the bolt 57 along the slot 59, the movement transmitted to the plate 35 by a transverse movement of the plate 18 can be varied and a scale 61 is provided on the lever 56 to indicate the size of the lettering produced. For transmitting longitudinal movement of the tracer to the pen, the carriage 18 is connected to a bar 64 by means of similar links and a bolt 57a adjustably clamped in a slot 63 in the bar. The bar 64 is, however, releasably clamped to the carriage 35 by means of bolts 65, 71 which clamp the bar to a slotted plate 67, fixed to the carriage 35, this arrangement permitting the slope of the reproduced letters to be varied by varying the inclination of the bar 64. The pen or pencil is supported on a bracket 79 carried by the plate 35 and is lowered on to the surface upon which the letters are to be produced by a Bowden cable 92 actuated from a kev 95. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, comprises also a catch and locking pin to hold the plate 35 in adjusted position while setting the apparatus, and a spring-controlled slide having a stop is provided to engage and steady the end of the plate 35. The pen, pencil or other writing instrument is mounted on a bracket 79 detachably held to the plate 35 by a bolt. Two pens &c. may be employed. The pen is slidably supported on its bracket 79 being pressed away from the paper &c. by a spring and moved towards it by means of a flexible cable operated by a key. The pen may be of the style type, and formed with a reservoir the lower end of which is closed by a valve which is opened against a spring when the style is pressed on to the paper. A spindle fixed to the machine carries a screw threaded disc which with a pointer fixed to the base plate of the machine indicates on a scale formed on the guide bar 3 the adjustment to be made for spacing the reproduced letters. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
