Abstract

<PICT:0452718/III/1> A constituent of a gaseous mixture is estimated by absorbing it from a known volume of the gas and measuring the reduction in pressure, or by allowing an added quantity of the constituent (e.g. water) to vaporize into the gas till the latter is saturated and measuring the increase in pressure. Fig. 2 shows one form of the apparatus comprising a cylinder 1 in which slide three equidistant rigidly connected pistons 4, 5, 6 forming two chambers A, B. A recess 13 in the cylinder wall contains the absorbent or vaporizable substances 15. The pistons are normally displaced to the right so that chamber A communicates with recess 13 and piston 6 is beyond the end of the cylinder. When the pistons are moved to the illustrated position a sample of the atmosphere is trapped in chamber B and subjected to the action of the absorbent, and chambers A, B are placed in communication with the ends of the manometer 11. Fig. 3 shows an alternative form in which the absorbent chamber 20 is protected by a sliding cover 23. A raised extension 22 of the latter encloses a sample of gas and bring it into communication with the chamber upon sliding the cover to the left. By applying the invention to air drawn from the interior of a block of solid material such as tobacco the moisture content of the latter may be estimated.
