[Class 83 (iii)] [See also Group XXIII] In a drilling, milling, or like machine comprising one or more pressure-fluid cylinders and pistons for feeding the tool or the work, one or more pressure-fluid cylinders and pistons for operating work securing means, a pump for supplying operating fluid to said cylinders and valves for controlling the supply and discharge of fluid to and from the cylinders, a valve is provided whereby fluid is prevented from passing to the feeding cylinder or cylinders until a predetermined fluid pressure has been attained in the other said cylinder or cylinders. As applied to a circular-saw metal-cutting machine, a pump q draws oil from a reservoir r and supplies it through a distributing valve t to a cylinder p containing pistons o, n which, through levers j, k actuate the clamping members h, i for the work c. The pump also supplies through a pipe 2 and distributing valve 4 to a cylinder f containing a piston e for feeding the slide b carrying the saw a. The pipe 2 includes a volume control valve 3 for regulating the rate of feed, a relief valve 7 whereby fluid can be byepassed to the reservoir, and a valve 5 loaded by a spring 6 or weight so that it does not open until the work is securely clamped. To prevent pressure fluid reaching the feeding cylinder when the clamp is released a loaded valve 15 is provided. The cylinder p may control a locking device associated with an indexing mechanism which serves both to move a work piece from one position to another and also to hold the work piece during the cutting operation.
