Abstract

452,249. Batteries. BURGESS BATTERY CO., Madison, Wisconsin, U.S.A. Dec. 14, 1935, No. 34764. Convention date, Dec. 15, 1934. [Class 53] The cells of a battery are connected together by flexible means to allow the battery to be folded or rolled up in either direction. Fig. 1 shows a number of cells 10 joined together by tapes 24 fixed to the cells by adhesive. Handles 48, 50 are attached to the end cells. Fig. 4 shows a method of joining the cells in series in which the connecting wires 93 pass through holes in the cell wrappings 92 and the tapes 24, but are situated beneath the tapes where they pass round the cells as shown in dotted lines. The individual cells 10 may be replaced by units consisting of a number of cells joined in series and parallel. Fig. 12 shows a modification in which two lengths of tape 24 are joined at intervals 132, 134 to form pockets in which the cells are contained and in which they may be fixed by adhesive. The cells may be housed in containers to allow defective cells to be removed. Fig. 10 shows a container for two cells in series in which the end contacts are made by springs 114 fixed to metal ferrules 108 carried by end caps 106. Contacts 116 pass through the container into engagement with bushings 112 into which the ferrules 108 screw. Specification 312,605, [Class 53], is referred to.
