Abstract
Fabrics &c. coated with rubber &c. are produced by forming one or more nips by positioning two or more moving surfaces, applying aqueous emulsions or dispersions of rubber &c. to one or more of the moving surfaces so as to form a layer thereon, effecting coagulation of the layer or layers before they enter the nip in such a way that coagulation proceeds outwardly from the moving surface, feeding fabric &c. into the one or more nips, and withdrawing the coated fabric through the nip or nips. "Striking through" of the latex is thus prevented. Waterproofed fabrics, weftless cord fabrics, rubber-backed carpets, and substitutes for cork, leather, and linoleum may be so produced, and felt or carded materials, e.g. cotton wool, silk or rayon may be coated. The nip or nips may be formed by positioning two or more rotating rollers, or two endless belts, or one endless belt and one roller, or by positioning two or more moving lengths of fabric, or by introducing one or more moving lengths of fabric through two rotating rollers. The layer or layers of dispersion may be coagulated by providing the moving surfaces with coagulant, or where heat-sensitive dispersions are used by heating the surfaces. Heat sensitizing agents include sodium or potassium silicofluoride, ammonium persulphate or reagents which react on heating to produce coagulants, e.g. zinc oxide and ammonium sulphate. When a length of fabric is employed as a moving surface, adhesion of the coagulated rubber is prevented by the treatment with coagulant, or when coagulation is by heating, a fabric coated, e.g. with shellac or a cellulose derivative lacquer is used. Rollers, if employed, may be covered with hard rubber. Natural or artificial dispersions of rubber, guttapercha, balata, vulcanized rubber, synthetic rubber, waste, or reclaim, alone or mixed, may be used. The concentrated dispersions described in Specifications 219,635 and 290,313, [both in Class 70], may be used. Frothed dispersions may be used, e.g. those described in Specifications 332,525 and 332,526, [both in Class 70], to produce fabric coated with cellular rubber. Specifications 416,077, 448,132; and 451,622, [Group VIII], also are referred to.
