Abstract

452,173. Axles for motor vehicles. MICHELIN & CIE, Clermont-Ferrand, Puy de Dome, France. May 24, 1935, Nos. 15217 and 15298. Convention dates, July 30, 1934 and Oct. 25, 1934. [Class 79 (iv)] [See also Group XXXII] A rail or road vehicle suspension comprises an axle which has a substantial resistance to bending transversely but is capable of twisting to a considerable extent, and is rigidly connected at each end to a support member which is also strongly resistant to bending in a vertical plane, but can both twist and flex horizontally, the inner ends of the support members being attached to the body of the vehicle so as to permit angular movement in a vertical plane with respect to their points of attachment, and tie-bars connecting the axle and the chassis or body. The axles are formed with a cross-section of small area with a periphery of considerable length so as to allow the necessary twisting. A large number of cross-sections are shown, of which Fig. 3 showing four assembled angle-irons, Fig. 5 showing a flattened tube, Fig. 7 showing a channel-section with unequal arms, and Fig. 11 showing a bent tube, are typical examples. Fig. 21 shows an axle of this kind having support members 5 rigidly secured near its ends, and pivotally connected at their other ends to a flexible torsion bar 8 which is anchored to the body at 9 so that the two ends can twist when transmitting strain to the rods 5. Various arrangements of tie bars 13 also arc shown. Figs. 18 and 20 are examples of sections of support members 5 which may be used. As an alternative the rods 5 may be connected directly to the body 10 with springs or rubber blocks between their upper surfaces and the chassis.
