Abstract
451,941. Casting in situ; conduits in structures. WARBURTON, R. E. L., 42, Rutland Gate, South Kensington, London. Feb. 11, 1935, No. 4314. [Class 20 (ii)] A tubular former used in casting hollow concrete structures consists of a plurality of spirally-wound or lap-wound layers of flexible strip material, one or more of the layers being coated or impregnated with a waterproofing medium. A number of layers 1, 2, 3 of strip material may be successively wound in spiral form over a mandrel as shown in Fig. 1, and an adhesive, such as bitumen, is applied between the layers 2, 3 during the winding operation. An outer coating of bitumen, synthetic resin varnish, cellulose, or wax is applied to the outside of the layer 3. A similar former may be produced by winding a sheet of cardboard or the like on a mandrel to form a lap-wound tube, the adhesive being applied to the inner side of the sheet. The strip material may consist of paper, cardboard, or chip-board. A concrete floor may be formed by casting a layer 7 of concrete on to shuttering 5 as shown in Fig. 3, positioning tubular forms 9 on this layer by means of spacers 8, and applying a second layer 10 of concrete so as to embed the formers and spacers. In forming a hollow wall, the tubular formers are supported within the shuttering for the lower section of the wall before the concrete is cast by means of spacing and supporting members independent of the shuttering. Any of the forms may serve as a conduit for cables, wires or pipes for various devices within the building. In a concrete road, the formers may form conduits for electricity supply or drainage systems.
