Abstract

451,615. Fluid - pressure brakes. DOORNE, H. J. VAN, Eindhoven, Holland. March 19, 1935, No. 8592. Convention date, May 12, 1934. [Class 103 (i)] A control valve for vehicle brakes that are applied by springs and released by compressed air or vacuum comprises for a compressed air sys. tem, a tubular member 22 movable by the pedal &c. against the action of a spring 38 and carrying a piston 25 subject to the pressure in a brake cylinder chamber 27, the lower end of the member 22 being adapted to seat on a valve 32 to cut off the chamber 27 from the atmosphere ports 24 and the valve 32 being adapted to seat on a fixed seat 35 to cut off the reservoir chamber 30 from the chamber 27. The spring 38 seats on a cap 40 screwed on to the fixed casing 12. The system comprises brake cylinders 8 on a motor vehicle or as shown on a trailer each provided with an extension 17 housing a spring acting on the piston to apply the brake, but normally prevented from doing so by compressed air acting on the other side of the piston. Compressed air supplied to the reservoir 4 by the compressor 1 flows through pipe 5<1> chambers 30, 27 of the control valve 12, and pipe 5 to the cylinders 8 until the pressure acting on the valve piston 25 moves the rod 22 upwardly to permit the valve 32 to seat against the wall 29, this pressure. being sufficient to release the brakes completely and being maintained against leakage. To apply the brakes the rod 22 is raised farther to unseat the rod from the valve 32 permitting air to escape from the cylinders 8 through pipe 5, chamber 27 the rod 22 and ports 24 in the rod ; since, when the brakes are released the pressure on the two sides of the piston 25 are balanced, the pressure which must be applied to the rod 22 by the operator in applying the brakes is dependent upon the braking pressure. When the pedal is released the valve 32 is unseated and the brakes are released. The pedal 10 may operate the valve device 12 through a floating link 10<b> to which is also connected by link 10c the cross-shaft 9 of the tractor brakes so that with cylinders 8 operating the trailer brakes, the application of the tractor brakes will be proportional to that of the trailer brakes. Operation may instead be effected by a hand lever 11, the cross-shaft in this case being connected to it and the valve by links 11<a>, 9<e>.
