Abstract

451,495. Manual exchange systems. PADDLE, L. H., 92, Lancaster Road, West Norwood, London. Jan. 2, 1935, No. 132. [Class 40 (iv)] [See also Group XL] Calling is initiated by placing D.C. on the speaking circuit of the calling operator to operate means whereby the call indicator at the calling station is rendered inoperative, the call being effected by transmitting to the called station a carrier or voice frequency signal. When the called operator replies, she places D.C. on her line which causes the call indicator at her station to be disconnected, the circuits being then in condition for communication. In the carrier system shown in Fig. 1, D.C. placed on line EX operates A which disables the incoming-call indicating- relay E and removes a shunt on the transmitting path whereby carrier from OSC is placed on the line. At the called station, the carrier passes HFF to detector V which releases C in its anode circuit whereupon D pulls up and operates E which connects ringing current to a bell or indicator. When the called operator replies, D.C. placed on her line operates relay A at called station whereupon E falls back and B pulls up, holds independent of A and maintains E unoperated. At the calling station, the received carrier releases C whereupon D and B pull up. The use of a separate valve V may be avoided by employing the detector valve in the demodulator as the control valve. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, primarily used for voice-frequency signalling, D.C. on calling line EX operates AA which disconnects the voice-frequency receiving equipment V, BB. A voice-frequency calling signal is then sent to line in a manner not shown and, at the called station, releases BB to connect up a local ringing source. In using this modification for carrier working, the release of BB at the called station operates auxiliary relays which apply intermittent ringing to the line, AA operating during a silent interval when D.C. is applied in response to the call.
