Abstract

451,141. Automatic control systems. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and WESTELL, E. P. L., c/o General Electric Co., Ltd., Coventry. May 31, 1935, No. 15876. [Class 38 (iv)] Temperature.-The input of an amplifier is connected to one diagonal of a Wheatstone bridge and the output to the other so that when in balance no oscillation. occurs. Means causing a current variation according to the state of oscillation of the amplifier caused by a degree of unbalance of the bridge control an element supplying heat to the space containing the bridge to maintain its temperature constant. The bridge may itself comprise the heating element. The anode circuits of two thermionic valves 15, 25, Fig. 4, are connected through the windings of a relay 21 so that their energizations under normal conditions balance. The valve 15 has its grid circuit connected through the transformer 12 across the diagonal 4, 41 of the bridge 1 subject to the temperature of a heated space 11 and the output of valve 25, which amplifies the output of the valve 15, is connected through the transformer 52 to the other diagonal 6, 6<1>. When the bridge temperature falls sufficiently the compling through the bridge is adequate to establish oscillation and the relay 21 becomes unbalanced so that the contacts 38 are closed and heating current is supplied to the resistance 36 to raise the temperature. The valve 15 is at the same time rendered more susceptible of oscillation with a view to avoidance of hunting by a change in grid bias caused by the winding 34 of the transformer 52. The connections shown provide for the application of D.C. to the bridge and an instrument 56 measures the D.C. out of balance current and acts as a distant reading thermometer. It may also act as an alarm or safety device if a wide departure of temperature occurs. Fig. 3 shows a form in which the bridge is at the same time the heating means for the space 11 the output of the valve 25, supplemented if required by alternating current supplied over the impedances 44, 45 from the source 37, traversing the bridge 1. The invention is not applicable to cases where temperature deviations in both senses may occur.
