[Class 87 (ii)] A device for grouping bricks &c. cut from an extruded column comprises a frame 16 on the discharge side of the machine which is positively moved forward with the column at the beginning of a grouping operation and is afterwards moved backwards while a movable depositing plate 19 mounted on the frame receives an additional forward movement relative to the frame to perform the grouping. The cutting mechanism comprises a carriage 1 operated from a driving shaft 15 controlled by the speed of the clay column 9 and operates as described in Specification 450,171. The frame 16 runs on rollers 17 and is reciprocated by a lever 33 from a cam 36 on the shaft 15. The supporting plate 19 is pivoted on a shaft 18 adapted to slide in a slot 20 and is rocked by a bolt 30 working in an angular slot 31 and operated by link mechanism 26 from a cam 21. In operation, a plate 38 receives the bricks from the cutting mechanism and, while the frame 16 is moving forward with the clay column, the plate 19 is first tilted and then moved forward in the slots 20, 31. When the plate 19 comes to rest the bricks 42-44 continue to slide forward thereon thus increasing their separation from the main column. The plate 19 then returns to its horizontal position and the frame 16 is moved backwards to receive a fresh group of bricks. The shaft 41 is driven from the shaft 15 through gear wheels 22, 23 the ratio of which depends on the number of bricks in a group. When there are four cutting wires and the bricks are grouped in threes, as shown, the ratio of the gear wheels is 4 : 3. If the groups contain four bricks the frame 16 can be combined with the carriage 1 and the driving mechanism 33 can be dispensed with. Specification 174,414, [Class 87 (ii)], is referred to.
