[Class 97 (i)] Cartoon films are produced by photographing one or more living characters or moving objects before a two-dimensional background, while simultaneously recording sound, projecting enlargements of the pictures individually on to separate translucent sheets, sketching the characters &c. in cartoon form thereon, tracing the outlines on to transparent sheets, rendering opaque the areas enclosed by the outlines thereon, preparing a' three-dimensional model corresponding to the two-dimensional background, and photographing the tracings in succession before the model background ; the three-dimensional model may be replaced in the final photographing by a back-projected photograph or kinematograph film thereof, or the tracings and model may be separately photographed, the final film being prepared by double printing; the two-dimensional background may be a back-projected photograph of the three-dimensional model. The sketches may be made on celluloid, and additional outlines may be traced thereon, or cut-outs may be applied to them. Apparatus is described, comprising a frame adjustably supporting a projector and a frame for the translucent sheets, to enable an artist to make the sketches. Fig. 3 shows a frame 40 for the transparent sheets mounted, with lamps 34 and a camera 33, on a carriage 41 movable on rails 32 before a three-dimensional model 37 backed by a twodimensional scene 38. The frame may be slotted to receive one or more fore-ground strips 36; alternatively, the carriage 41 may be movable to and from the model 37.
