[Class 38 (iv)] Temperature.-A prolonged idle period of the driving-motor b of a compression refrigerating- machine to allow the evaporator d to defrost is brought about automatically when, by reason of the accumulation of frost, the period of operation of the motor permitted by a thermostat f in the cabinet in the usual manner, is extended beyond a predetermined time. The normal control is restored after each de-frosting period. The thermostat controls the lead g to the motor and the other lead h is connected to the motor through a contact strip p on a clockdriven disc m and the coil of a magnet k adapted to withdraw a pawl l out of engagement with a notch in the disc. Normally, the thermostat opens the circuit before tho contact strip p on the disc leaves the contact arm o, and the disc is arranged to return rapidly to its original position after travelling the length of the strip. If, however, the action of the thermostat is delayed, the circuit is broken at the contacts o, p and remains open while the disc completes a revolution, during which time de-frosting occurs. Tilting mercury switches controlled by a cam may be employed. The clockwork may be wound electrically from the current supplying the refrigerating-machine.
