Abstract

449,391. Valve circuits for wireless reception. SPENCER, R. E., 8, Courtfield Gardens, Ealing, London. Dec. 14, 1934, No. 35959. [Class 40 (v)] A wireless receiver is automatically pulled into exact tune by causing the departure from tune to control. the bias on the outer grid of a hexode valve 32 functioning as a variable impedance, the reflected capacity in the control grid circuit varying the frequency-determining circuit 4 of the heptode frequency-changer 1 of a superheterodyne receiver. The output circuit of the intermediate-frequency amplifier 15 comprises a series circuit 19, 20 tuned to the intermediate frequency, the voltage across the condenser 20 being applied to a diode 23, 24, while that across inductance 21, coupled to 19, is applied to the diode 26, 24. The arrangement is such that when the receiver is exactly tuned, the two voltages are equal, and since the load resistances 27, 28 of the two diodes are connected in opposition there is then no p.d. between points A and A<1>; the bias of the outer grid of 32 is then determined by the resistance 34. If the receiver is detuned on one side or the other of the true I.F., the voltage across 21 or 20 predominates and the bias of the outer grid of 32 increases or decreases, the resulting change in input - circuit capacity varying the local oscillator circuit of 1 in compensating sense. The input capacity of 32 may be augmented by a small variable condenser 36 which may be unicontrolled with the receiver tuning to make the control even over the entire tuning range ; alternatively, the resistance 33 may be variable and may also be conjointly operated with the tuning for the same purpose ; or the condenser 36 or resistance 33 may be replaced by a number of fixed condensers or resistances respectively, selected by a switch ganged to the tuning control or the wave-range switch. Specification 450,806 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 437,442.
