[Class 19] [See also Group I] A shovel, scoop, or the like is provided with means for trapping material to be collected in front of its leading edge, this means being so interconnected with it as to permit relative sliding movement in a substantially horizontal direction to transfer the trapped material to the shovel or the like. The trapping means may take the form of a pusher member comprising a metal or other rigid plate or ram, or a brush or strip of rubber or other flexible material. A shovel which may be used without undue stooping comprises a walled tray 1 provided with a handle 3 and a hollow handle shaft 2 of the shape shown. The walls may be shorter than the base of the tray. A pusher plate 6 is carried by spring-pressed slide rods 5 sliding in guide tubes 4. The rods are connected by a cross-bar 9<a> connected through power-transmission linkage to a lever 10<a> pivoted on the handle 3 and movable by the hand holding the shovel. The power is transmitted through a thrust rod 12, a pivoted bell-crank lever 13, 15, and a link 16. Instead of the plate 6 being moved towards the shovel to transfer the trapped material, the shovel may be tilted so as to take its bearing on the ground by means of the lower edge of the plate 6 and may then be pushed bodily towards the plate. The power-transmission mechanism may be dispensed with. In a modification, the handle shaft may be parallel to the leading edge of the shovel and the pusher may be actuated by Bowden or other mechanism. The pusher may be arranged to fold or to be movable out of the way.
