Abstract

<PICT:0448556/III/1> <PICT:0448556/III/2> In processes for contacting a liquid and a gas or vapour such as fractional distillation, gas or vapour absorption in or separation from liquids, the fluids are subjected to the following steps: (a) substantially the whole of the liquid supplied to the contacting stage is entrained by the gas or vapour; (b) the fluids are removed and the gas or vapour separated from the liquid; (c) the separated liquid is returned to a preceding stage and the gas or vapour passed to a succeeding stage. In a plant for fractional distillation in which the stages are arranged side-by-side, each comprises a contacting chamber 2, a separator such as a cyclone 6, a vapour inlet pipe 8, and a liquid return pipe 9. A perforated plate 4 is arranged between the vapour and liquid inlets. The first stage is connected to a still 1 and the last to a condenser 11 and a receiver 13, part of the final condensate being returned to the last stage through a pipe 14. The plant may be adapted for gas washing by replacing the still by a supply of gas, and the condenser by a storage vessel, the washing liquor being supplied through the pipe 14. The process may be applied to a column still by interposing transverse partitions 19, Fig. 2, between the bubblerplates 18 and connecting the separators 22 between the space above a partition plate and the space below a partition plate of a preceding unit of the column, the gas or vapour and entrained liquid being fed to the separators from the space below the partition plate of the first mentioned unit. The operations may be carried out under pressure. The process may be used for the fractional distillation of alcohol, petroleum, and for the recovery of solvents.
