Abstract

448,408. Echo - soundino apparatus. MORSE, H. E., and MACKENZIE, E. B. D., H.M.S. Osprey. Dec. 3, 1934, No. 9732/36. Divided out of 448,331, [Group XIX]. [Class 118 (ii)] [See also Group XIX] A recorder for use in echo-sounding comprises a stylus driven round a circular path by a constant-speed motor through a variable speed device whereby records may be made either (e.g.) in feet or fathoms. Means are also described for varying the time when the initial sound is emitted in relation to the time when the recording point moves on to the record strip. The recording point 50 is carried by an arm 51 secured to a continuously-rotating disc 51A. The record may be made by electro-chemical means on a strip arranged as described in Specification 448,331. The point 50 is normally connected by a slip ring to the echo-sounding mechanism, but at predetermined intervals a cam closes a switch to connect the point to a commutator to make the dotted lines 64 forming a scale. The disc 51A is driven from a motor 54, Fig. 4. through variable-speed mechanism 53 which may also drive the record strip through a connection 81. The emission time is varied by turning a knob 68 on a shaft 69 carrying brushes 67 which are thus moved round a drum 66 having a conducting segment and being driven from the disc 51A, the brushes 67 being connected to the sound emitter. Another arrangement for obtaining this variation is shown in Fig. 5. A drum 71 rotates with the disc 51A and one emitter brush 77 bears on a conducting ring 75 on the drum, the ring being connected to a contact 74. Another contact 73 is connected to a series of six contacts 72 co-operating with the other emitter brush 76. The contacts 73, 74 are bridged once in each revolution by brushes on a normally stationary bar 79, the angular position of which is adjusted by a knob 80.
